Can the Lakers make the playoffs this year? Of course. Anything is possible and them making the playoffs is certainly not impossible.
Do I expect them to make the playoffs? No.
Would I be surprised if they made it? No.
Prior to the season, I told others the Lakers would win about 30-35 games and were two or three years away from the postseason. 12 games in, they are 7-5, have improved both offensively and defensively and are surprising a lot of people.
But, before we get ahead of ourselves, there are still 70 games left in the season.
We do not know what the rest of the season is going to be like. The NBA is unpredictable.
However, we can still make predictions based on what we know, so let’s do it.
If the Lakers were to continue their current play and win seven out of every 12 games, they would finish with about 43-47 wins and about 35-39 losses.
A record in that range could possibly score them a seventh or eighth seed, depending on how competitive the Western Conference is this year. Having veteran-players in Luol Deng, Lou Williams, Timofey Mozgov and Jose Calderon who have playoff experience will certainly help, as well. Not to mention Coach Luke Walton’s lengthy postseason runs with the Golden State Warriors the last two years.
Should the Lakers make the playoffs this year, whether they win a single game or not, would be great experience for such a young team and could draw in veteran free agents for years to come.
The next four months are going to be exciting for the Lakers and their fans as the, “Young Hollywood,” squad continues to open eyes.
Sorry Laker-haters, but all the above is possible. Don’t say I did not warn you.
